128 Thread/64 Core CPUs coming...

Postby pandelta » Sat Nov 10, 2018 4:33 pm

AMD teased their next gen Zen 2 Epycs cpus based on 7nm tech. Intel is still working on 10nm tech so its going to be interesting to see how this pans out. What's really cool is AMD decided to go to a more module design allowing for more flexibility with the cpu "chiplets". Each high end chip would have 8 chiplets with 8 cores connected to a central IO chip made with lower tech to save money. In theory we could see GPU chiplets or other tech replace cpu chiplets on a single CPU die for different applications.

it's good to see AMD be competitive again. I'm debating whether to build a 9th gen Core i7 or wait to see how these new chips from AMD play out.

I personally would wait awhile. Early benchmarks are showing a 13% improvement clock for clock and with the new 7nm tech it will definitely see a considerable mhz bump. Early engineering samples are already running faster than prior generation. The first chips are expected by April. It might be worth waiting awhile If for nothing else it might cause Intel to drop prices.

I would love to buy a 64 core 128 hardware thread Threadripper/Epyc. Too bad the thing is going to cost 4 million -- I mean 4 thousand dollars during launch.

I guess the positive side to this is the enormous price drop on Xeon E5 26XX V3 and V4 processors after launch this Spring.

Now there is a great idea! Those may actually become affordable!

Oh Yea Pandelta! Talking about affordable E5 Xeon processors --- I mentioned here:
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/foru ... ffset,1320

That I was able to buy 2 E5 2695 V2's for $239 during Thanksgiving. That's 24 cores 48 hardware threads. If you have any dual E5 2660/2670 V1 rigs, you can upgrade to 48 threads per rig.
