DENIS: Distributed Computing Has a Heart

Postby Col323 » Wed Dec 02, 2015 9:49 am

The DENIS Project does research on heart and potentially brain cells. http://denis.usj.es/ As of December 2015, it's entering a new phase. During the summer and fall, the user base developed optimized apps which greatly increased crunching speed. These were approved by the project team, and widely distributed among large crunching teams. This new phase will include the optimized apps, and broaden the scope of research.

Some information taken from their website:

Distributed Computing
Electrophysiological Models
Networking Collaboration
In Silico Research
Sharing Knowledge

DENIS uses volunteer hosts to compute large packets of cardiac electrophysiology simulations. Electrophysiological models are a powerful tool to study the electrical activity of cells under normal or pathological conditions. These models can also help predict the effects of drugs in heart and brain cells. These models are complex and it’s neccessary to simulate them many times (varying the conditions or model parameters). For this reason, researchers in this field usually require high computational power. We have created DENIS as a simulation infrastructure to help researchers.

What does it run on?
For now, DENIS is CPU only.

Where can I find stats?

This new phase is starting soon. I imagine we can improve on our already impressive 34th place rank!

Another cool project. I didn't know about this one. Thanks for creating a thread for it.

Work for the new phase has been slightly delayed due to health reasons.

Work has started to flow again this week. It's all in Beta form at the moment. Just like WCG, this means you have to specifically opt in to receive Beta tasks.

Go to your account page.
Click on "DENIS@Home preferences".
Click on "Edit preferences".
Check the box for "Run test applications?"
Click "Update Preferences".
Let the work flow. And post if you're still having trouble getting any or have other questions.

There are currently 5 of us on the team. I've seen 3 of us return Beta work. That's good participation rate, especially for opt-in work!

It's been tricky to get work throughout most of 2016. There were a lot of starts and stops, and much of the work was Beta work. However, 2017 has started with a bang. They loaded a new model with over 100,000 units. That has been chewed through but they say they would like to keep a steady stream available while processing this model. That seems to be holding true thus far; in the past 24 hours the available work has hovered between 2,000 and 5,000 units. Currently, the work loves OSX. So if anyone has any Intel Macs laying around, this is the place to park them. No word if there will be any tweaks for Linux or Windows.

The work continues to flow for DENIS. They recently completed some research which seems pretty exciting and they will present at a conference. As best as I understand it, the DENIS system was fed a model with a defect. Our calculations explored the model and found the defect, and allowed the project scientists to recommend a solution to the defect.
