WCG On Android

WCG On Android

Postby thepeacemaker7 » Fri Mar 23, 2018 4:35 pm

Hey Guys,
I got the WCG Android Bug. I am running 4 Asus Tinkerboards with the Android version of BOINC using Android 6.0.1. I decided to go down the Android road this year because of ridiculous GPU and memory prices :icon_rolleyes:

There are some positives and negatives associated with this approach.

Positives:
1. These four Tinkerboards generate ~16 days of CPU work and 4000-7000 points (times 4) per day -- with little heat output in comparisons to the Boinc X86 servers I have.
2. I am using 16GB compact flash cards as hard drives for the TInkerboards, and it is easy to set up the first tinkerboard and then make an image of that 16GB compact flash card to image the other Tinkerboard machines with.
3. I get to learn a little more about android debug bridge (adb) and other android nuances.
4. the Asus Tinkerboard has a Gigabit Ethernet port which many Android devices do not have.

Negatives:
1. Boinc for Android is not accessible by BoincTasks64 or Boinc-Manager. (Probably for security reasons)
2. The only remote desktop program for android I like is called seven-square, and it is somewhat slow and jerky.
3. The WCG Android crunchers can only run SCG, OETI, ZIKA, and FAAH

Overall I think this project is worth it. I may look into the source code for seven square to see if I can make improvements to the slow and jerky behavior.

Sounds like they are very productive. I think there are some in the guild that are running BOINC on their smartphones but I haven't gone down that route.
